To the Scholar of Chivalry

Written by: Ser Aerek Ancyrion, Knight Arbiter

I journey north from Meropis to find a scholar of Chivalry quoting my Asterian Code. I encourage such discourse, but poignantly you omit the fourth passage of that document, entirely devoted to that balance between Chivalric courtesy and the efficient prosecution of war.

"Knights should be a force for moderation and civility in warfare, and should seek to prevent egregious War Crimes, but there shall be reasonable exemption to Chivalric norms during sanctioned Raids, active Conquests, great Crusades, or similar such conflicts."

Sir Aodfionn upholds his Duty to the Goddess Gaia and the Empire of Eleusis through uncompromising tenacity upon the field, and he upholds his Honour by stating open intent toward future interlopers in Eleusian battles. I have seen the Gaian Knight withdraw his forces from raids with defenders too few to offer glorious battle, proof of Chivalric commitment even in wartime, but it is foolhardy to expect all the courtesies of Chivalry--exemplary as that would be--on pitched battlefields where armies are gathered and meteors are flying.

The Code of Chivalry calls us to perfection, and few Knights shall never fall short, but a Knight's vices are weighed against their virtues, and the Honour of their detractors shall be weighed alongside the charges.

In Honour eternal,
Ser Aerek Ancyrion

Penned by my hand on the 24th of Daedalan, in the year 965 AF.
