Humble Realism

Dear Aroan, Epopt of Wintertide,

In the year 880 when I was a young Atavian in my then-home of Ashtan, I wandered Sapience and for little more than my own amusement, picked up three relics: Earthshaker, Lifegiver and the Equilibrium Gem.

I made a detailed note of this in my journal, as my actions caused Atalkez and Penwize to have a bloody battle right in front of my eyes within the city streets. This level of visceral memory is one that lingers, and I vividly recall watching Atalkez fall to Penwize's blade. I remember Atalkez hunting me down after, admonishing me for laughing about causing his death.

I can agree that such memories could potentially be implanted, but to suggest that these relics never existed means that not only have memories been impacted, but there has also been a removal and implantation of false knowledge in journals held by even the most unknown of people. These words remain in my own writing, on the page I placed them, with the smudges I caused.

There is clearly something amiss, but I believe my memory and recollection of my own history to be correct. If memories have been altered, then the whole of reality has altered too, including journals we hold and tomes we may read.

I trust that those with minds far wiser than mine will guide us to the truth, as either way, some memories are not what they should be.

[Etched overleaf are stick-figure depictions of Atalkez, Penwize and an awkward Atavian. A brief description of each scene is scribed underneath the boxed drawings:

Ashtan, 880 AF. Xylah is pulled from where she stands by Atalkez and his whip! Atalkez wields a bow, aims it, and Xylah's left foot explodes with white hot pain. Xylah can't move, but laughs and says to the Dawnlord, "I did this on purpose." Xylah slips on ice repeatedly as she tries to leave. Without any prior conferring, Penwize enters the scene! With a snarl of contempt, Penwize's weapon is quickly drawn, thrust and pulled free from Atalkez, causing a spurt and splatter of crimson. Penwize draws his blade again and unleashes three precise strikes towards Atalkez, the blade slicing effortlessly through his flesh. As a great arc of crimson lifeblood leaves his body, Xylah hears a terrible rattle escape Atalkez's throat as he dies. Sinister glubbers, puffballs and seven-hundred and twenty-two gold sovereigns fall to the ground from Atalkez's bloody corpse.]

Penned by my hand on the 23rd of Glacian, in the year 916 AF.
