A Sestina From a Son

Alone I wait here by the side
Of the chapel in the cold snow
I await the cart that will take
You to your final resting place
And eternal home; I want to say
But your are no longer here;

And sitting alone now, here
I ponder, as I look to my side
In my mind I see all you, I say
To shadows as around falls snow
Is there an emptier space or place?
That of your memories I now take;

And you know, I wish I could take
Heed of the words that you said here
In this cold, dark and dreary place
Whisper promises of the lighter side
But now they're dashed again' the snow
I think I will always miss you! say;

That you miss me too, but do not say
What we could be, or what we'd take
From this cold winter draped in snow
Our promises buried forever now here
When will we turn to the other side?
Perhaps when we go to a higher place;

Will we be met there by sun or by snow?
Will heaven reign high within that place?
Will you be as I remember you now here?
Will you hear me when words to you I say?
Will my will to the gods finally take
Place now that I am here by grave side?

Here you'll lie in the cold snow
Side by side with your family in place
Say I to the ground, my love take.
