Wilderness and Distance

Not that long ago, when we introduced ships, we also made a
rather subtle change with some far-reaching implications.

The change has primarily to do with distances and the
wilderness (which you can enter via ENTER WILDERNESS or
by boarding a ship).

Many abilities, we found, were able to work at essentially
infinite distance in the wilderness, and did not respect
obvious divisions of the realms such as continents.

So we changed the way distance is calculated in the
wilderness (or, rather, we introduced a manner of
reckoning distance in the wilderness) and applied it
generally.

This has had the salutary effect of protecting places
that could only be reached by ships so that they
remain reachable only by ships and not, for example,
reachable by prism or pilgrimage or wormhole or
track which would defeat the purpose of ships or
at least relegate them to the status of 'initial mode
of transport'.

I'm sorry for not being able to give an exhaustive
list of every single thing that may have been affected
by this change. If you find one and are not
sure, it's ok to ask. Otherwise, carry on!

Penned by my hand on the 2nd of Ero, in the year 465 AF.
