13.4.5 Finding Weapons or Armour to Buy
(See also: HELP ARMOUR, HELP WEAPONS, HELP BUYING) Many, especially younger Achaeans, focus a lot of energy on locating weapons and armour. Sometimes this is not a good idea at all, so the first thing to do is ask: DO I NEED ARMOUR, or DO I NEED A WEAPON? Do You Need a Weapon? --------------------- Probably not. If you're a Bard, you'll need a rapier soon. If you're one of the three knightly classes (Infernal, Paladin, Runewarden), you'll want a sword, probably a shortsword. That's it! If you're an Apostate, Alchemist, Blademaster, Druid, Sentinel, Jester, Mage, Monk, Occultist, Priest, Serpent, Shaman, or Sylvan, you either don't use weapons, don't use weapons yet (younger Serpent), or you have a special way to get your own (Priests summon their own maces, and Jesters wish for their own blackjacks). Do You Need Armour? ------------------- Armour can be pricey, for a younger Achaean. Buying armour can definitely wait, if you can even use it at all. Magi can't use armour or shields at all. Monks can't use shields. Everybody else can use both to some degree. See HELP ARMOUR for details. How Much Do Weapons Cost? ------------------------- You should be a member of a House, in which case you will likely get a free or very cheap weapon to start. Failing in that, you'll pay from perhaps 500 to 1500 gold for a shortsword, and a somewhat broader range (say, 500-4000 or so) for a rapier. Where Are Weapons and Armour Sold? ---------------------------------- Both are sold primarily in adventurer-run shops scattered throughout the cities of Sapience. Start with your own city whenever possible, since there are often discounts available. If you don't have a city, then start walking! There are dozens of shops in each city, stocked by their owners as they are able. Stock changes from minute to minute, and there is no guarantee that a price is fair either, so bring a friend (a friend with the WeaponProbe ability if at all possible).
