9.37.10.1 Beverage Design
Having gained the Beverages skill and chosen one or more specialisations (see HELP BEVERAGES for instructions on how to do so), you are now ready
to start designing drinks!
Below is a comprehensive guide from start to finish on how to design and eventually create a beverage-related item, including any and all relevant rules and guidelines to ensure your design matches Achaea's standard of writing and acceptable content.
To quickly get started making a drink, you will need to find a design!
Use NDS LISTPUBLIC B to see all beverage designs available to you.
Select one you like, and use NDS P <design#> to examine it in further detail.
From there you will be able to determine which specialisation the beverage falls under, what command you will need to make the beverage, and which ingredients are required.
Ingredients will be taken directly from your rift if not in your hands.
So long as you are in possession of enough to cover the design requirements, you may:
PRESS <nds id#> INTO <storage container/vessel>
- You will need to have a press in your inventory before you can PRESS.
STEEP <nds id#> INTO <storage container/vessel>
- You will need to have a kettle in your inventory before you can STEEP.
MIX <nds id#> INTO <storage container/vessel>
- You will need to have a shaker in your inventory before you can MIX.
DISTILL <nds id#> INTO <aging container/vessel>
- You will need to have a still in your inventory before you can DISTILL.
FERMENT <nds id#> INTO <aging container/vessel>
- You will need to have a carboy in your inventory before you can FERMENT.
- Beverages that need to be aged will need to be placed in barrels, casks,
or kegs in a cellar (see HELP HOUSING UPGRADES).
- All beverages can be placed into barrels, casks, or kegs for storage.
- Barrels, casks, and kegs will need to be made by a furnisher.
- If a beverage is best aged, then distilling or fermenting it into a
vessel for direct drinking will result in poor product.
All non barrel/cask/keg equipment can be purchased at "a cool cellar" in Delos.
To design your own beverages, first create your sketch:
(To design your own vessels see HELP VESSEL DESIGN.)
DESIGN CREATE LIQUID

Beverage Syntaxes
------------------
PRESS <nds id#> [PASSCODE] INTO <vessel>
STEEP <nds id#> [PASSCODE] INTO <vessel>
MIX <nds id#> [PASSCODE] INTO <vessel>
DISTILL <nds id#> [PASSCODE] INTO <aging container/vessel>
FERMENT <nds id#> [PASSCODE] INTO <aging container/vessel>
- You will need empty vessels in your inventory or at your location.
- Provided you have the appropriate specialisation and ingredients in the
rift, make a beverage.
- This will alter the vessel's Examined description to be the INVESSEL of
the beverage.
- Aging containers must already be present in the housing cellar before they
can be used to age beverages
PROBE <barrel|keg|cask>
- FOR DRINKS THAT ARE BEING AGED
- See if/when your aged beverage is ready for drinking.
- A drink will remain at the ideal drinking stage for one in-game year
before it moves into being past its prime stage.
DRAW <liquidshortname> FROM <keg/barrel/cask> INTO <vessel>
- Draw a beverage that was being aged or stored into a vessel for drinking!
Beverage design has no pattern or schematic to use, the entire design is
created by you!
DESIGN <sketch> FLUID <fluid type>
- This sets the base liquid for the sketch and can only be one of the
following options:
absinthe(D) eggnog(M) whiskey(D)
ale(F) gin(D) rum(D)
beer(F) grog(F) vodka(D)
bourbon(D) juice(P) brandy(D)
buttermilk(M) kawhe(S) tea(S)
cider(F) lager(F) toddy(M)
cocktail(M) liqueur(D) vermouth(D)
cognac(D) mead(F) port(F)
cordial(P) milkshake(M) porter(F)
darkbrew(F) tequila(D) stout(F)
wine(F)
(D) = Distilled, (F) = Fermented, (M) = Mixed, (P) = Pressed, (S) = Steeped.
NOTE 1: Beverages should not include straws, spoons, or other various drinking accessories. This is unfortunate, but because the beverage is a standalone drink/liquid, it cannot refer to the vessel it may eventually be poured into.
NOTE 2: Punch as a drink is a mixture of artificial, processed fruit flavours. It is not a mix of real fruit juices. "Punch" in designs that use juice or any natural ingredient should always be a "cocktail" or a "juice" mix with juice as the base fluid.
NOTE 3: Pumpkin-spice, and pumpkin pie spice do not exist in Achaea. These are a modern American invention; if you are designing beverages or foodstuffs that use them, please explicitly list the individual spices and not the amalgamated (and anachronistic) whole.
NOTE 4: The names of the Gods are not appropriate for use in beverage titles unless explicitly commissioned by one of Them.
DESIGN <sketch> GENERIC <text>
- The Generic description is appended to the Appearance of a vessel to
quickly convey what is inside.
- 25 characters maximum.
- For example "apple juice"
- This must use the fluid type as the main noun.
- This should not be a full sentence.
- This should begin with a lower case letter and not end in a full stop.
DESIGN <sketch> INVESSEL <text>
- This describes the beverage when within a vessel.
- This will append the INVESSEL of the beverage to the vessel's
PROBED/EXAMINED.
- 250 characters maximum.
- For example DESIGN <sketch> INVESSEL The fine pulp created by pressing mists golden apple juice with a cloudy haze.
- The main noun here must match the fluid type.
- This should be at least one full sentence.
- This should begin with a capital letter and end with a full stop.
- Do not include actions or reactions, simply what the item is.
- Designs must be suitable for someone working in a medieval-ish
environment.
- Do not "evoke" or tell the reader what sense/emotion/impression your
recipe gives.
- Crafters are not enchanters, magic is not permitted in crafted designs.
- Designs should describe the item, not the onlooker or consumer, use of
"you" and "your" is prohibited.
- All numbers must be written out in words. "one, two, three," etc.
- Single spacing only.
- Do not use words that require accents or other non-English punctuation,
these cannot be replicated in Achaea and will be treated as misspellings.
E.G: Puree, Sautee are common examples that would require an acute accent
over the e.
- Please use a GB English spellcheck and the Oxford comma. Achaea does not
use American spelling.
- Do not write messages into designs.
- Keep your designs tasteful (not necessarily tasty).
DESIGN <sketch> FIRSTDRUNKIDEAL <text>
- This is the message people will see when they drink this beverage.
- For aged beverages, this is the description at the ideal consumption time.
- There is a maximum of 240 characters, which the system will limit you to.
- Keep these reasonable, without forcing actions upon the drinker that go
beyond the explicit drinking of the item.
- Do not force subjective reactions upon the drinker.
- $vessel can be used to refer to the appearance of the vessel being drunk
from.
DESIGN <sketch> THIRDDRUNKIDEAL <text>
- This is the message people will see when someone drinks this beverage.
- $vessel can be used to refer to the appearance of the vessel being drunk
from.
- Use the following in place of names and pronouns: $drinker, $drinker_his,
$drinker_him, $drinker_he.
- Adding a plus (e.g. $+drinker) will capitalise the word.
- $+drinker takes a sip of apple juice. $+drinker_he then tips back $vessel to chug down the rest.
- Do include some version of the 'appearance' description. Otherwise
onlookers will see only "Amunet drinks from the glass." They will not know
exactly what she has drunk.
DESIGN <sketch> TASTE <text>
- This sets the text the taster sees if the liquid is of perfect age or does
not need aging.
- 120 characters maximum.
- This automatically prepends the appearance of the vessel.
- This must end in a full stop.
- ALWAYS PROBE THE SKETCH AFTER SETTING THIS.
DESIGN <sketch> NOSE <text>
- This is what your beverage smells like.
- For aged beverages, this is the description at the ideal consumption time.
- You can use the SMELL command to inspect a beverage before drinking it.
- When designing this aspect of a beverage, please note that the 'appearance'
of the item will automatically be prepended to the beginning of the text.
- You will see the full sentence when you probe your sketch.
- ALWAYS PROBE THE SKETCH AFTER SETTING THIS.
- This must end with a full stop.
DESIGN <sketch> INGREDIENTS ADD|REMOVE <#> <ingredient>
- Add ingredients to your beverage design.
- This is optional.
DESIGN <sketch> PRIVATE ON|OFF
- At a cost of 1000gp you can hide your designs from others when they do
NDS MATCH searches. This flag may be set on the sketch or after approval
with the corresponding NDS command.
DESIGN <sketch> AGED <YES|NO>
- Does this beverage need to be aged?
- This will only be permitted for beverage designs that make sense.
IF YOU SET AGED ON A DESIGN YOU WILL ALSO NEED TO SET THE FOLLOWING FIELDS

beyond the explicit drinking of the item.
- Do not force subjective reactions upon the drinker.
- $vessel can be used to refer to the appearance of the vessel being drunk
from.
