7.30.1 AI Ethics
Statement on AI Ethics regarding Cognitive AI We understand that some people may have an issue with generative AI, whether that's because of some alleged ethical violations with what data was used to train them, or simply objecting to AI doing what may be considered rightful human work by some. Regarding the human work aspect, nothing about our cognitive AI takes jobs away from anyone. It's not possible for a human to craft AI responses quickly enough to be even remotely feasible, and while people can possess denizens in the game and have them give human-written responses, these take time and aren't scalable. The cost to staff a system 24/7 that had people ready to respond asap to anything that triggers a cognitive denizen would be so high that the system would never get used. It would also, aside from being very expensive, be -much- slower in terms of response time. The only way cognitive denizens are possible is with AI - they don't replace humans creators in any way, but they do augment the experience for human players. Regarding the training of AI models, while this isn't the place for a nuanced discussion of AI ethics, we recognize there's a range of valid and principled viewpoints people have here. Our point of view is evolving as AI technology evolves, but right now we find that the benefits of experimenting with this new technology are worth it while the legal status of using the data they are trained on is litigated and potentially regulated. We'll be watching those developments closely, and will, of course, follow American law there. We built this system in such a way as to relatively easily accommodate, at least in theory, switching to other AI systems, so if we learn that the way a particular AI model was trained is now illegal, or that a new AI model that performs at least as well has less controversy over its training data, we'll switch to a new one.
