a long dark road I hope I never have to travel (again)

I've seen the glory of the night sky
filled with sparkling light,
I've seen a blushing amber moon
aiding the stars to gleam so bright.

I've heard the searching call
of the lonely whippoorwill,
I've heard hungry nestlings crying
and their mother's comforting trills.

I've watched the mighty river flowing,
seen the bluegills gentle swim,
the pinks and blues and violets
of a sunset growing dim.

I've seen majestic mountains tall
purple heights above the clouds,
seen the lightning dance across the sky
answered by the thunder trembling loud.

I've watched flowers grow, then bud, then bloom
their fragile beauty amazes my eye
I've seen eagles rising in the wind
to soar across the sky.

Nature's beauty I can hope to praise,
like the spider's silky lace,
but the one thing I could never do
is portray the more than beauty of your face

Your eyes make stars seem dull and dim
when lit by your sweet laughter.
Your smile does make my knees grow weak,
my mind forgets that which I'm after.

The calmest lake seems roughest water
next to the smoothness of your skin,
the glorious sound of your dear laughter
can't help but ease the hearts of men.

The dreadful hurricane seems naught
but a light breeze blowing by and by
when I feel the pain inside my heart
brought by the sadness of your sigh

I briefly may have had the chance
to stand there by your side,
but now you've gone and found another
leaving me alone with just my pride

My heart still aches from a last memory
of a touch we once had shared,
I never knew if you returned my love,
I never knew how much you cared.

Someday I may find someone
to fill my heart anew
but can she ever fill the place
that is still saved for you?
portray the more than beauty of your face
