blue-eyed fish

there was a pond I used to sit by
I'd read a book and watch the sky.
until one day with a flash and a splash
a blue-eye fish caught my eye with a dash.

it skirted and flirted
its scales full of gleam.
of the sun just setting
or the moon's shimmery beam.

this blue-eyed fish knew something others didn't
It was a beauty and nothing was near it.
it pranced and it danced and showed off its spark
but to its unknowing I wasn't the only who saw in the park.

a barbed tailed cat a sleepy little thing
who liked to dance and claw pretty strings.
was napping by the same pond you know the one
in a patch warmed comfortable by the sun.

she came to the park on this particular day
she came to sleep because she didn't want to play.
as she settled down to bake gently in the sun
she spotted the blue-eyed fish in her fun.

now this barbed tailed cat was a sly one you see
she was a professional catcher of things in the tree.
and things on the ground and up in the air
she was sure she could catch a blue-eyed fish so fair.

so the barbed tailed cat, she crouched down
by the edge of the pond and watched the fish without a sound.
nothing moved on the cat so still except her tail
which lashed the air in anticipatory thrill.

a flash and a dash and even that stopped
time, heartbeats and even the temperature dropped.
I watched in horror and in glee
as a paw reached out in grim majesty.

there is this pond that I sit by
i used to read and watch the sky.
but now I come to watch a cat
who lies in the sun all sleek and fat.

Penned by my hand on the 17th of Phaestian, in the year 256 AF.
