The Island and the Upstart

We once had a mighty empire
A globe was ours to rule
But we burned on the sickly sweet pyre
Lit by the callous, monstrous fool.

Our plucky island nation
Which once did rule the waves
Our lonely confrontation
A million, never saved.

A perfidious, treacherous rot set in
Which we seeded in our prime
The pilgrim upstarts once our kin
Like weeds, o'ershadowed our perfect time.

The 'free ones' stole our own land
They sucked the rich earth dry
We shriveled in their shadow
'Neath the parasite, we dwindling lie.

No prizes for guessing the two subjects.
