On the 15th of Daedalan of the year 394, Ephialta, the Keeper of the
Flame of the Zaphar cried out in pain from the river beneath the village
Eleusis. Eski Windsong was the first on the scene, only to find out that
the flame, along with its keeper, was slowly dying. It was not long
after this before Imyrr Rousseau discovered a cloud of sludge drifting
through a river, and soon more such clouds were discovered at the
sources of other streams.
The ghastly sludge was soon determined to be the source of Ephialta and
the Flame's weakening. A Sentinel named Brandi Silverwing soon fell ill
as well, contaminated by contact with the sludge. The sickness rapidly
spread in what can be described no other way than a viral explosion and
was immediately dubbed "The Plague", the words first a whisper then a
roar that rumbled through the realm, horror and fear in its wake.
Despite the combined efforts of dozens of adventurers to locate a cure,
the plagued continued to show symptoms and contagion, resulting in a
mass panic when Blujixapug Lucoster's life became the first to be
claimed by the illness.
Unbeknownst to the landwalkers, a hidden chamber lay within the Temple
of the Sea. When nine years prior the goddess Ourania had departed Her
sanctuary within the sea, She had shed a single tear as She rose from
the waters. The divine tear had been placed within this hidden chamber
for safekeeping, cradled within the ocean deep.
Nine years later, it had begun to grow and transform, and called for
purer waters from the land to fulfill its inborn need. Heeding its need,
the lakes and rivers of Sapience had all but emptied themselves to
deliver their purest waters to the tear and left only the sludge that
would otherwise be evenly distributed throughout the water.
Once satiated with the purest essence of the rivers and lakes of
Sapience, the tear finally transformed into the form of a young woman,
provoking bewilderment in the priest who had guarded it for many years.
Zaphar cried out for the Goddess who had shed it, letting Her know that
it had transformed.
The Lady of the Moon and the Lord of the Sea rushed simultaneously to
the side of Their newborn daughter to welcome Her to the world. Curious
onlookers soon found their way into the temple, led by Revelation Azon,
to find the three sitting together. Neraeos, Lord of the Sea, then
publicly bestowed upon His daughter Kastalia dominion and stewardship
over the lakes and rivers of the lands.
Seeing that Her daughter was yet weak and required rest, Ourania
escorted Her away to the Garden of the Gods. Before Their departure
however, Kastalia bestowed the gift of a flower bulb to Greyda Corten,
Speaker of Eleusis, instructing her to plant it within an enchanted
spring.
Heeding the young goddess's words, Greyda planted the bulb in a pond
within the garden of the dryads. To the awe of all who witnessed, a
beautiful large white lily sprang forth from the bulb instantaneously.
The curative powers of the lily were such that Greyda, Gork, Xel,
Delphinus, and others were able to use its petals to cleanse the lakes
and rivers of their impurities. After the freshwaters were no longer
contaminated by the sludge, the plague soon lifted from the whole of
Sapience.
Penned by my hand on the 4th of Valnuary, in the year 394 AF.
