A new command to read messages has been added today: RM
HELP MESSAGES explains it in detail.

In brief, typing RM (and nothing else) will attempt to
read your next available unread message.

Typing RM <value> (for example, RM 3) will start reading
from message 3, or the first message after message 3
that is valid.
