Apology Declined

Treasonbringer,

I was practically a child when I confronted you in the Muurn Lighthouse, and asked if you were happy to see the city in ruin, but you were not. Cyrene had been your home longer than I had been alive, you reminded me.

You asked me to have a heart, for you, too, had lost your home. But my grief is not yours to share; it was not your grief then, nor will it ever be. Cyrene was not taken from you, like it was from us. You abandoned it.

I will make no argument against your stupidity, but I implore you not to credit it with what is owed to your selfishness. I heard your rallying cries for diplomacy with the oppressors, as did we all. They were not silenced, but refuted. Our citizens and leadership decided to fight back against the invaders rather than negotiate with them, and you decided unilaterally to ignore us, to undermine us.

You exacerbated the divide between those who wholeheartedly supported the city's path forward and those who held out hope of diplomatic resolution, all under the guise of loyalty to the city you left behind for not getting your way. So convincing was your pantomime of acting in the interest of the city that our former leader commended you on your departure, for leaving amicably, as you say. Your betrayal was not a misguided attempt to do right by us, but a calculated exit strategy as you flitted from one loyalty to your next in the name of self-advancement.

History will remember the decisions you made, when you made them, not that you attempted to answer for them decades later with your tail between your legs.

Rest assured that we see you exactly as you are.

Proudly Cyrenian,
